The Guardians are a race of uncarnate spirits. There are two major factions, the Seelie Host, led by Evandar, and the Unseelie Host, led by Shaetano. Their development is extremely variable, from souls that meld into one another and split apart, to individuals that consider themselves as having family units, such as Evandar and his daughter Elessario. As a result of Elessario's experiment in incarnation, many of the Guardians took physical forms, most of them amongst the Westfolk.
