Rhodry
Personality[]
An exceptionally good-looking man with 'raven dark hair and corn-flower blue eyes', Rhodry is one of the most honour-bound characters in the entire series, and is first and foremost a warrior who gets taken by berserker fits during battle. He has great respect for those with fighting ability regardless of social standing, and is well-loved by the common folk. Although he is at the centre of much of the key development in Deverry, and an early prophecy of Nevyn's states that 'Eldidd's wyrd is Rhodry's wyrd', he has little control over the major events in his life.
In the Books[]
After Loddlaen's dweomer war, he is sent into political exile by his half-brother Rhys. During his wanderings, Rhodry is captured and sold as a slave in the Bardekian archipelago. When Rhys is mortally wounded, Rhodry is recalled from exile to take his brother's place as the Gwerbret of Aberwyn. When his true lineage is in danger of being discovered, Rhodry fakes his own death, and begins living among the Westfolk.
A rose ring handed down from his elven father (he again got it from the Guardian Evandar) gives Rhodry the true name of the dragon Arzosah. On his way to find her, he encounters Otho’s aged mother Othara, who renames him “Rori.” Compelled by the power of her true name, Arzosah assists Rhodry in the defense of Cengarn. They become friends, and he gives her the ring at the end of Days of Air and Darkness, freeing her.
Rhodry undergoes a physical transformation as Evandar strives to save his life from Raena's stabbing (at the cost of his own existence as a Guardian, enabling him to finally be born into the world of mortals) and turns into a dragon. In this form, he uses the name that Othara gave him.
He is featured in nearly all of the Deverry books: Daggerspell, Darkspell, The Bristling Wood, The Dragon Revenant, A Time of Exile, A Time of Omens, Days of Blood and Fire, Days of Air and Darkness, The Gold Falcon, The Spirit Stone, The Shadow Isle, and The Silver Mage. Including his past-life incarnations, he is featured in all of the books.
Family and relationships[]
Rhodry's mother is Lovyan, and although he is publicly believed to be the youngest son of Tingyr Maelwaedd, his father is in fact Devaberiel Silverhand, an elven bard-- though only a handful of people know his true parentage. He has three half-siblings on his father's side: Ebany Salomonderiel (Salamander) and a full elven sister and brother; and three brothers on his mother's side: Rhys Maelwaedd, who becomes gwerbret Abwerwyn at his father's death, a brother who died in infancy, and another who was killed during his first battle.
Rhodry has sexual relationships with many beings over the course of the series.
He has a bastard child, the Lady Rhodda, with Clwna, the soap-maker's daughter of Cannobaen. He spends a few years together with the Silver Dagger Jill before she leaves him for the dweomer. He marries Aedda when he is made Gwerbret of Aberwyn and has four children with her, Cullyn, Lovyn, Blaen and Ygwimyr. After faking his death and going to the Westlands, he has a tryst with the transformed wildfolk the White Lady. After that he becomes the lover of Dallandra and Evandar. On his quest to find the dragon Arzosah he starts a relationship with the half-dwarven mistress of Haen Marn, Angmar, with whom he has twins, Berwinna and Marnmara. After being turned into a dragon, he becomes the mate of Arzosah, and has a dragonling with her, Devar. After being turned back into a human, he returns to Haen Marn to settle down with Angmar.
